The legacy of Macayo Restaurants and the family who built them goes back 50 years. Woodrow Johnson was born in Arizona in 1917- just five years after Arizona was accepted into statehood. As a youth, Woody traveled often to his mother's homeland of Sonora Mexico to savor the lovingly prepared dishes of the Macias family that would later be the cornerstone of Woody's first restaurant, which was opened in 1946. Dishes that remain a mainstay of Macayo's menu to this day.
Today the third generation of Johnsons carry on the proud 50-year old tradition. When the Suns built America West Arena nearby, the Boys knew the Fry Building was the location they wanted. The Grill opened on December 3rd, 1992 & subsequently added the back room in 1993. The Fry building basement used to be host to cockfights, but it's now transformed into offices, food prep rooms, & storage space. But that's enough about the Past.
