The Lamb & Flag is situated in the heart of the Colleges, University buildings & Museums on the north side of Oxford. There's been a tavern called the Lamb in St Giles since medieval times. The pub moved to its present locale in 1617 to become the Lamb and Flag. The name comes from the symbol of St. John the Baptist, to whom St Johns College, next to the pub, is dedicated.
The pub was the setting for Thomas Hardy's "Jude the Obscure" (Jude's wife, Arabella, was the barmaid there). It is also featured in the autobiographies of Graham Greene, JRR Tolkien & CW Lewis who drank here at times. The present day Lamb is a haven for students & world travelers.
